New generation of laser protection films reduces noise exposure
Laser cutting of sheet metal has become an indispensable part of the metalworking industry. POLIFILM PROTECTION, one of the leading global manufacturers of surface protection films, has developed a wide range of solutions for laser cutting applications over the years. The latest addition to its portfolio is a universal laser protection film that significantly reduces noise exposure in the workplace.
The POLIFILM PROTECTION range includes films for every cutting requirement including solutions that combine maximum cutting speeds with flawless cut quality when using fibre lasers, special technologies such as transparent laser protection films that allow visual inspection while the film is applied and specialised laser films designed for easy removal, helping to minimise the risk of bending, especially when processing thin sheets.
Noise reduced by 30 dB
With the new generation of laser protection films, POLIFILM PROTECTION is once again responding to market requirements. The PF584 SCP ULF expands the surface protection specialist’s range with a universal laser protection film featuring a specially developed adhesive technology for further improved unwinding performance. As a result, noise generated during unwinding is reduced from 110 dB to around 80 dB, depending on the lamination conditions. This corresponds to a 99.9% reduction in sound energy and approximately eight times quieter as noticed by users.
Improves workplace safety
For customers, reducing noise levels to 80 dB supports them in complying with occupational noise exposure limits. Under EU Directive 2003/10/EC, hearing protection is required from an exposure level of 85 dB(A). The US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) likewise requires hearing protection measures above this threshold.

Optimum cutting, efficient processing
The PF584 SCP ULF combines all the proven benefits of POLIFILM PROTECTION’s standard universal laser protection film. It is suitable for both CO₂ and fibre lasers and ensures clean, burr-free cuts. Its optimised adhesive strength prevents blistering, whilst the precisely engineered adhesion provides reliable protection from the beginning to the end of processing, including all forming operations and enables fast, residue-free removal.
This innovative film increases processing efficiency compared with other noise-reducing surface protection films, as a result of the fumes and vapours generated during laser cutting leaving significantly less residue on the cutting head. This allows longer intervals between cleaning cycles, resulting in fewer scheduled production interruptions.
