POLIFILM Management Academy – the value of internal talents

Interview with Marc Luther, Head of Corporate Development and Co-founder of the POLIFILM Management Academy

The POLIFILM Management Academy is the training programme for the next generation of leaders within the POLIFILM Group. It is training the managers of tomorrow. Marc Luther, Head of Corporate Development and co-founder of the POLIFILM Management Academy, explains why the programme was launched and how it will influence the continued success of the POLIFILM Group.

Marc, you are one of the initiators of the POLIFILM Management Academy. How does one, as the Head of Corporate Development, get involved in such a topic?

When Paul Beaver, CEO of POLIFILM PROTECTION, approached me with his idea to establish a Management Academy for upcoming leaders, I was immediately enthusiastic. In my more than 15 years with the POLIFILM Group, I have repeatedly observed the difficulty of recruiting external candidates who not only perfectly fit to a vacant position but also align well with our POLIFILM family. What could be more logical than to purposefully prepare talented, dedicated employees—whose strengths and weaknesses we are well aware of from day-to-day work—to take on more responsibility? The idea was born, and after some discussions, the concept was in place.

What is the basis of the programme?

Two things are crucial for our success: flexibility respectively individuality in training contents and goals, as well as a well-balanced mix of internal and external knowledge transfer. We explicitly did not want a standardized training program that needs to be “completed”, but rather a highly individualized training that, on one hand, takes into account the strengths and weaknesses of the candidates and, on the other hand, balances the needs of POLIFILM. Additionally, it was important to us to pass on as much knowledge and experience from long service member of POLIFILM as possible, enriching this internal knowledge deliberately with external training contents.

We did not want a standardized training program that needs to be “completed”, but rather a highly individualized training.

How do you secure this?

We have made it our mission to assign each student a dedicated mentor from the senior management of the group, who ideally supports them with advice and assistance throughout their entire career at POLIFILM.

The pilot project has been running for some time now. How satisfied are you?

Well, about a year after launching the Management Academy, I can say that our concept is working. At the same time, there are aspects that we have adjusted and will continue to adjust based on the experiences we have gained. Just like our cadnidates, we aim to continuously evolve the Management Academy.

How do you rate the programme for yourself personally?

To continue the exceptional success story of the POLIFILM Group in the future, we need extraordinary employees, and I am proud to be able to contribute to ensuring this.
